Pickin' on the Porch Revival

Pickin' on the Porch was started by Larry Wilson as a drop-by jam session and developed into a local phenomenon attracting celebrities and musicians from afar. It was ended by the pandemic but is now back at the museum as a quarterly event.
Larry Wilson and his talented friends are bringing back this Bastrop County icon every quarter starting on November 15 from 12-2 pm! With its signature mix of improvisational magic and easy-going vibes, this beloved event promises a treat for longtime fans and newcomers alike. The museum is honored to host Pickin’ on the Porch and bring it back to the community.

This month’s Music in the Museum featured the incredible Jeff Hortillosa, a world-traveling musician known for his work with the acclaimed band Whiskey Shivers. Jeff brought his signature mix of energy, artistry, and storytelling to the Bastrop County Museum & Visitor Center, captivating the audience with his dynamic performance and undeniable stage presence.

Downtown Jazz Trio

September’s Music in the Museum event filled the Bastrop County Museum & Visitor Center with smooth rhythms and the warm tones of fall, thanks to the Downtown Jazz Trio. The talented group of local musicians treated a packed and enthusiastic audience to an afternoon of classic jazz standards, creative improvisations, and even a few unexpected requests from the crowd.

The Terry Moore Trio, featuring the dynamic talents of Terry Lyne Moore, Travis Tharp, and Colin Guerra, filled the Bastrop County Museum & Visitor Center with a fresh yet nostalgic sound that celebrated the spirit of live music. More than just bandmates, the three longtime friends shared their deep love for music and performing, creating an experience that resonated with everyone in attendance.

Drawing from a wide range of influences, the trio delivered a seamless blend of genres—from the iconic sounds of the ’60s and ’70s to classic rock and country favorites. John & Jenn from the vibrant Austin band, My Nextdoor Neighbor, performed a stripped down acoustic set, featuring reimagined originals and favorite covers blending their vocal harmonies and intricate guitar work. Their performance was mesmerizing. Known for their work in Austin’s progressive jamtronica band My Nextdoor Neighbor, this duo brings a fresh take on their genre-bending sound.​​

Pickin' on the Porch Reunion

Years ago, local musician Larry Wilson launched a monthly tradition that quickly became a Bastrop County staple: Pickin’ on the Porch. What began as a casual gathering of musicians sharing songs and stories soon blossomed into a beloved community event, drawing both locals and notable guests with its warm, welcoming spirit and rich musical talent.

When the pandemic put many traditions on pause, Pickin’ on the Porch was one of them. But thanks to Larry and his talented friends, the music lives on—this time at our Music in the Museum series!
​
This rare reunion performance packed the house, with a standing-room-only crowd swaying, singing, and soaking in the joy of live music. From timeless classics to catchy originals, the musicians' seamless harmonies and heartfelt energy reminded us all why live music matters.
​
We had such a great time, we’re already dreaming of bringing Pickin’ on the Porch back in full swing—with Larry leading the way. Stay tuned and keep your ears open—more magic is coming!

When a last-minute cancellation left a gap in our Music in the Museum lineup, Ben Zuniga graciously stepped in—and truly delivered a memorable performance. Blending heartfelt original compositions with well-loved covers, Ben captivated the crowd with his warm vocals, skilled guitar work, and down-to-earth presence.

The intimate setting allowed for a genuine connection between performer and audience, with spontaneous singalongs and smiles all around. His performance was a true testament to the spirit of live, local music.

Robert A. Kraft

In February, Bastrop’s own Robert A. Kraft captivated a packed crowd with an electrifying performance. He delivered an eclectic mix of covers spanning various genres and eras, along with heartfelt original songs. Between sets, Kraft entertained the audience with stories from his colorful past, all of which have shaped his passion for creating authentic music and connecting with community.
​
Beyond his talent as a performer, Kraft has played a pivotal role in the Bastrop live music scene, championing independent artists by ensuring they have venues and gigs to showcase their talents. Among his many contributions, he founded the Bastrop Live Music Foundation, which is dedicated to ensuring musicians are paid fairly and fostering community connections through live music.

Honey & Harmony

In January, the Bastrop Museum welcomed Honey & Harmony, an up-and-coming local band, for a truly memorable performance. This talented trio brought their unique blend of blues, jazz, and funk, perfectly complementing the mellow, sunny winter day.
Known for their chill, groovy vibe and talent for improvisation, the band captivated the audience with their seamless riffing and even collaborated with one of the youngest attendees to create an inspiring song about hope for the future. Adding to the magic of the day, they premiered a brand-new country-style song that showcased their versatility.

Sean Orr

Local favorite Sean Orr brought the house down at a standing-room-only Music in the Museum event! Widely known for his exceptional fiddling, Sean treated the audience to a festive mix of Christmas favorites, Celtic tunes, Texan flair, and Cajun rhythms—showcasing his incredible range and lively stage presence.
His performance was a joyful celebration of musical traditions that had the crowd tapping their feet and smiling all night long.

The Rambling Mystics

The Rambling Mystics is a husband/wife team of Dylan and Samantha Goldberg Blackthorn from the Bastrop area who dedicate their music to reviving storytelling and heritage. Their musical ranges from traditional tunes to original compotisitions always with a touch of humor, history and whimsy. ​
